The Lost World by Michael Crichton

“It is now six years since the secret disaster at Jurassic Park, six years since the extraordinary dream of science and imagination came to a crashing end—the dinosaurs destroyed, the park dismantled, and the island indefinitely closed to the public.

There are rumors that something has survived… .”

After finishing Jurassic Park, I decided I was curious how the story of The Lost World would be. How would it compare with the movie? I know that Jurassic Park seemed to contain parts from all three of the movies, so I was curious to see how close the second book came to the second movie. I was also curious since in the first book, a couple of the main characters in the second movie had died. I very interested to see how they went about those changes.

It turns out that Ian Malcom, who we had thought was dead in the first book, survived. He had been in the hospital getting better. Unfortunately, John Hammond was still dead, so unlike the movie, there was no grand research team that was brought together by Hammond. Instead, there was a rescue mission similar to that in the movie. It was actually still led by Malcom, but this time it was to rescue Richard Levine. Levine had gone to Isla Sorna to search for the dinosaurs that they had heard were being raised there. After everything that happened in the first book, the Costa Rican government tried to cover everything up. Levine had a feeling that there was more to their story.

I am really glad that I watched the movie before reading the book. It is often times easier to visualize what you are listening to after having some form of visual. This was true even with the differences in the book and movie. It was still a lot easier to visualize it.

I really do enjoy the movies, but it has been a nice change up to read the books that gave inspiration to them. Even though there are a few differences, the movie and the book are both good in their own way. If you enjoyed the movies, I would highly recommend reading the books. After reading them, you have a better understanding and appreciation for the movies, in my opinion!
