A Perfect Stay No Matter the Season

Our quest for the quintessential Pacific Northwest experience led us to Coupeville, Washington, home of the historic Captain Whidbey Inn. Captain Whidbey Inn has been on Whidbey Island since 1907, and it continues to be a perfect getaway for everyone. Nestled in amongst old growth firs on the shores of Whidbey Island, Captain Whidbey allows for adventure, romance, and communion with nature. Between the historic lodge, updated cabins, and lagoon rooms, there is a little something for everyone.

We have stayed at Captain Whidbey now three times, with a fourth already booked! We have enjoyed every season there, from the cool brisk air of the winter to the summer breeze sitting outside on the lawn chairs. Our first impressions obviously did not disappoint. The historic log inn boasts an inviting and enchanting coastal charm, wrapping us in warmth and homeliness from the moment we stepped onto the property.

No matter what day of the week you stay there, they have something fun every night. We mainly stayed on the weekends, so of course we partook in the s’mores nights while we were there! They had fires set up at multiple locations outside, as well as one in the historic lodge. They even had the little s’mores kits already put together for us!

There is also a restaurant onsite that offers dinner options as well as what they refer to as “Deck Dining” which is served during lunch time. This option is only available during the summer months however. They also have a general store that offers some grab & go breakfast items as well as an espresso bar. The dining experience has been nothing short of delightful. We have been able to try many different locally-sourced meals that change based on the season.

For all those nature lovers, you are in luck! Captain Whidbey is in a perfect location for many different hikes and historic locations. A short drive from the property, we were able to embark on hikes showcasing the Pacific Northwest’s unspoiled beauty. From Ebey’s Landing to Sugarloaf Mountain and Mount Erie, there are many hikes to explore. Honestly, there is something for the whole family. Even if you mainly want a beach day, Deception Pass State Park is a short drive away. Do not forget to venture to two different forts either while you are here. Fort Casey and Fort Ebey are not far away and showcase different areas used during World War I and World War II. Both of these forts were used as coastal defenses during the war and still are standing strong for tourists!

Do not forget to also go explore the cute little coastal towns of Coupeville and Oak Harbor. Both have cute and fun downtowns with great stores and restaurants, if you are looking for something different. There is also a nice park in Oak Harbor, Windjammer Park, right next to the water that offers splash pads for the kids, a nice sized playground, and walking paths for that after dinner walk.

After a long day out and about, come back to the cozy atmosphere of Captain Whidbey. Curl up with a good book next to the fireplace, play a game of chess or other board game, or just listen to the roaring fire. The tranquility of the setting, paired with the gentle lapping of water against the nearby shore, provided the perfect backdrop for restful evenings.

The Captain Whidbey Inn is more than just a place to sleep - it is a destination. Look no further if you yearn for a mix of rustic tranquility, scenic adventures, and culinary delights. Our multiple stays have left us with cherished memories and a longing to return. We wholeheartedly recommend this charming hideaway.
